The old weight loss adage that you shouldn’t eat after 9 p.m. is mostly rubbish: If you aren’t going over your caloric intake for the day, eating late won’t make you gain weight.

But avoiding food after dark can help you lose weight. In a study from Brigham Young University, participants who were asked to abstain from eating between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. for two weeks lost 0.9 pounds per week, reducing their calorie intake by 238 per day. During weeks when they could eat after dinner, they gained an average of 1.3 pounds per week.
